Zero Dark Thirty

JOY REVIEW

Zero Dark Thirty is the much anticipated and awaited collaboration between Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal, who won the Oscar for the Hurt Locker.  This story is the hunt for Osama Bin Laden.  I mentioned earlier that I saw the production done by National Geographic on the subject, which I thought was terrific, but this one spends a great deal more time on the decade lead up to the assassination.  This stars Jessica Chastain as a CIA operative who is known only as Maya, who is recruited right out of high school, and this mission becomes her obsession.  The end of the movie is terrific and very exciting, and you can tell Kathryn Bigelow clearly has a sense for the military.  The first part is hard to watch and not particularly entertaining, although it’s interesting, and feels more like a lecture.  It could have used some streamlining and goes into detail about how the US involved itself in torture and other things we pretend that we really don’t do.  The last hour, even though we know how it’s going to end, is extremely well done. Three Stars.
