Wolverine – Movie Review
Wolverine lives a mutant life, seeks revenge against Victor Creed (who will later become Sabertooth) for the death of his girlfriend, and ultimately ends up going through the mutant Weapon X program.
“Wolverine” with Hugh Jackman, playing the aforementioned mutant, is a prequel where we find out where Wolverine came from. We find out about his amnesia, about his lost love, and his strange relationship with Victor. If all of this sounds like gobbley gook, you’re clearly not a Marvel comic fan. This movie starts off incredibly. It starts 150 years ago with Wolverine and his brother Victor finding out their terrible secret and escaping. We see them fight every war from the Civil War, to World War I, to World War II, to Korea, and they probably even have them in Iraq. And then we see them becoming mercenaries. And when I say mercenaries, Wolverine still has a heart, but Victor, his big brother, is becoming more and more demented. So the first half hour of the movie is terrific. Unfortunately, it doesn’t know where to go after that and the rest of the movie gets soggier and soggier and soggier. There is a hint at the very end of things to come. But as a prequel, this makes a huge amount of sense and is fun to watch for about a half hour. Unfortunately it’s a ninety minute movie. Two stars.
