Drew Barrymore makes her directorial debut with Whip It!, the story of an ex-beauty pageant contestant named Bliss (played by Juno’s Ellen Page) who leaves her crowns behind after joining a roller-derby team. While her mother would prefer that Bliss unlace her skates and step back before the judges, the rebellious teen instead seeks the wisdom of rowdy mentor Malice in Wonderland (Kristen Wiig) in learning the tricks of the circuit track.
Whip It! is a charming, basically 1950’s style movie that is the original directorial effort by Drew Barrymore. It concerns, as I’m sure everyone knows, girls’ roller derby and stars Ellen Page, who was such a star in Juno. It also has a great cast, including Marcia Gay-Harden and Daniel Stern as Ellen’s parents. Kristin Wiigs is a member of the team and Drew Barrymore herself. And it’s really a charming movie. It’s an enjoyable film. There’s enough violence for those people who look for violence in a movie being that there’s a nosebleed in the first 10 minutes. It’s a charming movie. No real surprises, but no real complaints. Some really solid acting and some solid directing. No tricks here. Three stars.
