What Goes Up
What Goes Up – DVD Review
WHAT GOES UP is a film about a morally challenged New York reporter, Campbell Babbit (Steve Coogan, who learns life lessons from a group of dysfunctional students while covering athe story about a local hometown hero.
“What Goes Up” is kind of a strange movie with Steve Coogen, who is plays it straight in this one. He’s a reporter who’s gotten in over his head, by covering a subject with whom he falls in love with, who actually commits suicide, but he keeps writing about her as if she’s alive. His editor doesn’t exactly understand what’s going on, but sends him off to cover the Challenger launch. At which point he’s feeling so bereft and lost that he calls up an old school chum who turns out who’s just suicided. If this doesn’t sound exactly cheerful, you’re probably right. I’m not sure what exactly the movie is about, except, alienation and love and reaching out for people, and walking past open windows. It’s not a terrible movie, and I think there really was something here that they were trying to say, I just don’t think they succeeded very well. Two stars.
