Unstoppable is a drama about a runaway train carrying a cargo of toxic chemicals. Pits an engineer and his conductor in a race against time. They’re chasing the runaway train in a separate locomotive and need to bring it under control before it derails on a curve and causes a toxic spill that will decimate a town.
Unstoppable stars Denzel Washington and Chris Pine and is directed by Tony Scott and it has to do with a runaway train. That’s basically all you really need to know. The last 10 or 15 minutes of the movie are absolutely heart pounding and you know that Denzel’s not going to die. I mean, Denzel’s the movie star. He’s not going to die. Chris Pine is a movie star, he’s not going to die. And it does take away some of the tension in this, but it’s well enough shot and well enough edited that it really does get your heart rate up, which is what the Scott brothers and Scott family does better than anybody. The first half of the movie is somewhat of a yawn and I’m not sure actually why. Rosario Dawson is also very good in this. So for some reason, it just doesn’t have the punch that you really wanted this movie to have. As I said, the last 10 or 15 minutes are great and watching Denzel throw his arms in the air, always a thrill. So I’ll give it three stars, but that’s probably being a little overly generous. It’s probably a two and a half star movie realistically, unless you really love either trains or Denzel. And it’s also based apparently on a true story, so two and a half to three stars. Can I give it two and three-quarters?
