Sundance Film Festival Audience Award winner Undertow / Contracorriente (Peru), which deals with ghosts, forbidden gay love, and social conformism.
“Undertow” is Peru’s official selection for the Academy Awards, and I haven’t seen any of the other nominations, but this is a terrific movie. It is kind of a combination of Brokeback Mountain and Dona Flora and Her Two Husbands. I don’t want to tell you too much about it, because I want you to discover it on your own. But, it opens with a very charismatic man listening to his pregnant wife’s belly about their unborn child. And, he has a lover. And, what happens — this is just — it is one of those movies, that will really engage you and make you think, and it’s quite emotional. It’s quite wonderful. It’s quite beautifully shot. So, five stars.
