Tower Heist has got a really interesting cast, including Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Alan Alda, Judd Hirsch, Casey Affleck, Michael Pena, and Tia Leoni, some really good people, and the story seems very timely. It opens with a great scene of Alan Alda, who’s in very good shape, swimming in a pool on the top of a building that has got a picture of Ben Franklin’s $100 bill on the bottom of it. It turns out that he’s the Bernie Madoff figure who has stolen from everybody in the building, including their pension fund. Ben and the group go up to the penthouse to confront him and end up bashing his car in revenge and they all get fired. They find out that he’s got $20M in cash some place, so they decide that they’re going to break in and steal the cash. This is kind of a combination heist movie and economic statement. I also thought it was surprisingly fun that Eddie Murphy is sort of turning into an interesting looking man as he ages at 50. Ben Stiller is calmer in this one than he usually is and I think Michael Pena is always adorable. I just liked this movie and Alan Alda was appropriately slimy. There are some things that really don’t work that well, a car that weighs that much, but I don’t want to give away any of the fun. I think it’s a three star movie. It was fun, it was well written, and it was entertaining. It didn’t do terribly well at the box office, but I still think it’s a kind of fun movie. Three stars.
