Three Penny Opera is certainly a classic and its being done by the Atlantic Theater Company, the book and the lyrics are by Bertolt Brecht. Most notable among the cast is F Murray Abraham as the narrator. The setting is terrific and they have six piece orchestra that is wonderful and they are on stage the entire time, and there are 15 people in the cast, so it is not a small production. On the surface there is a lot going for this play, but i have to tell you, it was a flat production. I don’t know if they were having an off night, but I have to tell you, it just laid there like a pancake. It is a story about beggars, the idea being that it was so inexpensive that even beggars could go see it. And the story is about Mack Heath, who is clearly a bad guy, and he seduces the Peachum’s daughter, and you have Jenny the hooker, who plays her own lament. Mack has the police chief in his back pocket, so he feels he is invulnerable. The cast in wildly uneven, the performances were uneven, the costumes are great. It has a lot of wonderful pieces, but it just doesn’t come together. I would like to give it 2.5 stars, but with all the bells and whistles, I give 3 stars.
