THE TREE OF LIFE
The story centers around a family with three boys in the 1950s. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence.
The Tree of Life is the latest from Terrence Malik, who did the Thin Red Line, which is one of my favorite movies of all time. He also did Badlands, which is probably nobody’s favorite movie of all time. This one stars Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain. Terrence Malick has a particular visual style. The question is what is this movie actually about. I think it is about three brothers who grew up with Jessica, the kind of earth mother, and Brad who is I suppose supposed to be somewhat villainous here, but he really seems more like an old fashioned kind of dad than anything else. It is a confusing movie. The kids are wonderful. The scenery is beautiful. I’m not sure why we needed dinosaurs in this one. It is certainly too long, whatever else is true. But, I mean this is at least an attempt to do something pretty interesting as a movie. For that, I would give it at least two and a half stars. In terms of trying to figure out what’s really going on, good luck. As I said, I think it is a story about three brothers growing up with different parents. But at least it is an attempt to do something pretty interesting. When compared to a lot of the crap that’s around, it is at least worth some time. So, I will give it three stars.
