The Toxic Avenger
The Toxic Avenger – Theater Review
JOY “The Toxic Avenger” is set in the mythical town of Tromaville, Exit 13B off the New Jersey Turnpike. An aspiring earth scientist, Melvin Ferd the Third, is determined to clean up the town’s burgeoning toxic waste, until he is tossed into a vat of radioactive goo and emerges as a seven-foot mutant freak and New Jersey’s first superhero. Armed with superhuman strength and a heart as big as Newark, he’s out to save New Jersey, end global warming and woo Sarah, the prettiest, blindest librarian in town.
Pick of the Week!
“The Toxic Avenger” is at New World Stages. I must admit to being somewhat prejudice. I saw the movie, the original “Toxic Avenger”. I even met Lloyd Kaufman. This musical takes a kind of crummy B movie, and makes it into high, fun art. There is the most incredibly talented five-member cast, who sing songs like “Get the Geek”, “My Big Friend’s Boyfriend”, and “Thank God She’s Blind”. Although the lyrics are irreverent, they are hilarious! This is by some of the same group who brought you “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”, as well as one of the musicians from Bon Jovi. I just can’t say enough about it. You will have a great time at “The Toxic Avenger”. It’s an hour and 40 minutes of just plain fun. If you know anybody from New Jersey, make sure you take them. They will probably think it’s hilarious, and if not, well, send the Toxic Avenger, New Jersey’s First Superhero right after them. Five Stars.
