The Secret in Their Eyes – Movie Review

A man wants to solve a murder committed many years ago.

The Secret in Their Eyes was nominated and actually won best foreign film at the Oscars this year. I have seen most of the other foreign flicks nominated and I was a bit skeptical that this one was really better than the other ones, but it is. It is Argentinean, so it is subtitled in Spanish. It’s about a retired criminal court investigator who decides to write a novel based on a 25-year-old unresolved murder and rape case which clearly still haunts him. This is much more than a thriller, this is a love story. This is about redemption, this is about friendship. It is really a wonderful movie. It is rich, it is well-written, it is beautifully acted, it is well directed. And it absolutely deserves to be known for the best foreign film, but maybe the best film of the year. I mean, I loved Hurt Locker and I think it really deserved to win the Oscar for best film in America, but if you compare the Hurt Locker to The Secret in Their Eyes, I am not sure the Hurt Locker would still be on top. This is a terrific movie that should not be missed, five stars.
