The Runaways

SYNOPSIS
A coming-of-age biopic about ’70s teenage band The Runaways.

JOY’S REVIEW
The Runaways has gotten a lot of ink, because it stars Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning. It is the story of Cherie Currie and Joan Jett starting their all girl band, the Runaways, which eventually morphed into Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Both girls are very cute, and have a great time being punky and drugged out and naughty and there is of course a little bit of lesbian lip on lip. They’re both clearly movie stars, they’re both good actresses. But I’ll tell the you the person who actually steals the movie out from underneath everybody is Michael Shannon who plays Kim Fowley, the Svengali rock impresario who puts them all together. Michael Shannon is one of those underrated actors. He’s a terrific actor, and he really does steal the movie. This is a lot of rock and roll, a lot of loud music and druggy hazes. It’s basically sex, drugs, and rock and roll with two cute and upcoming stars. I think it’s gonna make some serious money, especially for rock and rollers, and especially boomers who are going to look back and see this part of their adolescence. I’ll give it four stars.
