The Proposal – Movie Review
A pushy boss forces her young assistant to marry her in order to keep her Visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to Canada.
“The Proposal” is one more of those stories about an older woman and a younger man, and a woman who’s a fish out of water. It stars Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, who basically plays the cute girl part. Sandra Bullock is a hard-driving executive, who’s mean to everybody who’s about to be deported because she played fast and loose with the immigration department. Ryan Reynolds is her beleaguered assistant, who is witty, and charming, and cute but completely whipped. Sandra decides that the answer is to marry him, but he has to go to grammy’s 90th birthday party. Grammy, fortunately, is played by Betty White. Parents are Mary Steenbergen and Craig T. Nelson. Supporting cast is terrific. I get a little tired of the notion that we demonstrate that a woman is completely clueless by wearing too high heels in the wilderness and too tight a skirt. This is well written enough and the supporting cast is good enough that you actually get a giggle, but after you think about it, the movie doesn’t really hold up and there’s so many other solutions. It’s really kind of a cheat. So, two stars.
