The Paperboy

JOY REVIEW

The Paperboy has got a stellar cast, including Matthew McConaughey, Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, John Cusack and Scott Glenn as the father who is a newspaper publisher. It’s sort of a southern gothic tale of two brothers who have taken different paths and get involved with Nicole Kidman, who does some of her best work as a Barbie doll bimbo, very much like the Weather girl.  The story is of a reporter who comes back to his home town because a woman has said that her boyfriend, who’s in jail, was wrongly accused of murder.  I know, sounds like every novel we’ve ever read, right?  This one, I’m not sure I really got it.  It’s certainly weird, but compelling, partially because of the star power in it.  As I said, Nicole Kidman, who I think does some of her best work in this, John Cusack, whom you’ll never think about the same again, and I don’t know who Matthew McConaughey’s agent is but I think Zac out-chests him.  Matthew McConaughey is always known for taking his shirt off and Zac takes it off here.  As I said, it’s a weird movie.  It’s a little hard to know exactly what the point is but it is oddly compelling with a great cast, so three stars.
