The Oranges is a suburban comedy about two couples who live across the street from each other and, especially the men, have been best friends since kindergarten. They’re played by Oliver Platt and Hugh Laurie. The wives in the marriages that have gotten a bit stale are Catherine Keener and Allison Janney, and their children are played by Adam Brody, Alia Shawkat and Leighton Meester. The story is somewhat predictable, but heartfelt and very well acted and helps you understand both suburban male friendships, bored wives, girls who are competitive with one another and stuck in their high school ways of behaving, the boys who love them and the chaos that passion can cause in people’s lives. It’s certainly well acted, and you care about all the characters to varying degrees so three and half stars.
