The Monuments Men is based on a true story of a bunch of architects and art historians who were brought together by President Roosevelt during WWII in order to try to save some of the world’s art treasures that the Nazis had stolen and were hoarding. It has a fantastic cast, directed by and starring George Clooney, also featuring John Goodman, Matt Damon, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray and Hugh Bonneville. To a certain extent this should be a really fun film, but its not, and here is why. It moves much too slow, it should have been 90 minutes, instead it clocks in at about 2 hours, the things they do to try to bring some excitement and life, are nearly irrelevant to the story. It IS based on a true story, so one can’t claim that it is improbable, but they keep hitting over the head with the idea that it is okay for people to die trying to save art. There was a much easier shortcut, they could have pointed out that great artwork is worth a lot of money, and money is what supports Reichs and terror cells, and civilizations, so they didn’t have didn’t actually have to convince you that it is worth bleeding and dying to save a masterpeice, all they had to do was to point out the monetary value, and they could have gotten away with it, and we didn’t need to be hit over the head with it. So, while the cast is terrific, and the story has some interest to it, and they idea that we are our artwork…it may or may not be true, but there is no “jiuce” in this movie and there should be, so I can only give 2 stars.
