The Kid with a Bike

JOY REVIEW

THE KID WITH A BIKE or Le Gamin Au Velo. This is a lovely little movie about a very sad little boy who has absolutely no charm. He’s living in an orphanage because his father left him. He’s convinced his father wouldn’t leave him, and his father has his bike somewhere, so he searches for it. This is one of the most unsentimental movies you’ll ever see about a kid. It’s beautifully played, it won the Grand Prix at Cannes, and has gotten lots of nominations for best actress and screenplay. The only thing that I thought didn’t ring completely true is why the hairdresser that befriends the little boy is so dedicated to helping him; it would have been nice to have some back story to at least explain it. But as it is, it’s a charming story. Okay, yeah, it’s subtitled. Three and a half stars.
