The Informant! – Movie Review
The U.S. government decides to go after an agri-business giant with a price-fixing accusation, based on the evidence submitted by their star witness, vice president turned informant Mark Whitacre.
THE INFORMANT stars Matt Damon, who is really maturing into a very subtle and lovely actor. Steven Soderberg is wonderful director, but the story really — is just DOA. Matt Damon plays a guy who is impossibly naive, or seems to be impossibly naive, who works at a major corporation and decides to cooperate with the FBI in whistle blowing. But it turns out that things are not exactly as they seem. It takes two hours for us to get there. By the end, we are so under whelmed, we really don’t care. This is a great story; we’ve heard it before of a whistle blower. This is sort of a combination of the guy who is getting away with murder and seems to be really innocent and blowing the whistle as the same time. But it doesn’t really work, and this is surprising, because Matt Damon is a wonderful actor and Steven Soderberg is a wonderful director; but this is not a wonderful movie. One star.
