JOY’S REVIEW

The Housemaid is a Korean film with English subtitles. I know you’re already grimacing. It focuses on a young woman who comes into a household to be both nanny and housekeeper. There’s a mysterious older, sort of sad woman there who seems to be her mentor but is kind of cranky. A beautiful young wife and an incredibly attractive husband who’s impossibly wealthy and a cute little six-year-old all living in this fabulous house. What ensues is somewhat predictable to be quite honest, in that the master of the house, — oh I forgot to tell you the beautiful wife is pregnant with twins, and the gorgeous husband of course seduces the naive house maid who then gets pregnant. So all of it’s predictable up to that point. But then what happens after that is sort of a dark, gothic tale Korean style. I’m not going to tell you much about it but it’s actually good– except for the last scene in the movie, which actually doesn’t make a whole lot of sense or I think it’s not very subtle — the movie is not very subtle, but it is fun to watch. I give it three and a half stars.
