The Help is based on a best-selling book, and stars Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Bryce Dallas Howard, who is Ron Howard’s kid. Let me tell you that my bias is, as a southerner, I really hate these kinds of movies where all the whites are scheming, horrible people, and all the blacks are sort of helpless martyrs. I thought even the performances, except for Octavia, were really over the top in this one. Emma Stone, who seems to be in everything, doesn’t have much to do, but the film is certainly well meaning but basically not very interesting at the end. As a southerner, it’s not that I think there have not been problems in the south, and certainly Mississippi being the poster state for abuses, but it’s not a very good movie. Two stars.
