An unorthodox Irish policeman with a confrontational personality is teamed up with an uptight FBI agent to investigate an international drug-smuggling ring.
The Guard was written and directed by John Michael McDonagh, who is Martin McDonagh’s little brother, I think. You will see that it has some resonanance to In Bruges, in that it has got the wonderful Brendan Gleeson and Liam Cunningham. This has got Don Cheadle in it. The story is that Sergeant Jerry Boyle is a small town cop in a small town in Ireland, and Don Cheadle is a big deal FBI agent who is coming to figure out where the drug traffic is going on. And there are lots of stuff that happens, but, basically, it’s smart, it’s fun, it’s interesting, it’s violent, and it’s a little more slower paced than most American movies, but I liked it a lot. Four stars.
