The Gatekeepers is an alarming documentary about the Shin Bet, which is the Israeli equivalent of the CIA, in that they deal with external threats to Israel and was originally part of the Mossad. They go through all the directors who have ever had the job and the vagueries, and part of it is really upsetting that these guys seem to be, if not immoral, then at least having a different set of rules than most of us play by. By the end of it, you understand that they have a really difficult problem in that peace in the Middle East isn’t only just a problem for the Palestinians, but that in Israel there are conservative elements who really are as opposed to the government as I suppose conservative elements are here in this country. So, it turns out to be a sort of chilling and depressing, but fascinating, documentary about the politics of the Middle East, as seen from a very specific perspective, but a perspective that deals with eight various leaders who don’t share a world view and how the perspective evolves and changes. Four stars.
