The Frontline is the South Korean entry for best foreign film for the Oscars, and it’s really a terrific movie. It is basically Saving Private Ryan Korean style. There are some very well known South Korean actors, of course very well known to South Koreans, but not so much to me or to most American audience. This is a really blood and guts movie that deals with a civil war in Korea, South Koreans against North Koreans, and the price that everybody pays. The opening scene is the North Koreans taking South Koreans hostage and telling them to go home because the war will be over in a week. Two and a half years later they finally sign a truce, but then it turns out that the truce doesn’t take effect immediately. It’s haunting and heartbreaking, and a very good anti-war movie. Four stars.
