The Family Tree

JOY REVIEW

The Family Tree has got a relatively good cast including Dermot Mulroney and Hope Davis. The story revolves around a suburban couple that doesn’t get along very well with each other. He’s tempted by the hottie at work and she, it turns out, is having an affair with the next-door neighbor, and potentially with the next-door neighbor’s son. The next door neighbor sort of pretends to be a marauder and comes rushing in — I love rape fantasies in film – not – and during their kind of raucous lovemaking, she bangs her head and passes out and we don’t know if she’s alive or not, but it turns out she just has amnesia. She remembers back to the beginning of her marriage and so all of a sudden she’s crazy about her husband, she doesn’t remember who other people are, and she has a good relationship with her daughter. I mean I suppose it is supposed to be a satire. It’s got a good cast that sort of nothing happened to and what’s even worse is that we don’t much care. Two stars.
