The Divide

JOY REVIEW

The Divides is one of those horror stories that I guess is supposed to be a metaphor for something. At the beginning of the movie, a woman stands near a window watching a mushroom shaped cloud that’s about a mile and a half away. Mysteriously, everybody is perfectly okay, including the window not shattering. Her boyfriend grabs her and they run downstairs. So a group of, I think, eight people end up in the cellar of an apartment building that apparently is not only bomb proof, but also nuclear bomb proof even when the door is opened, but nothing happens to them. The group consists of the aforementioned woman, who is cute and seems to be a little catatonic; her kind of wimpy boyfriend, Michael Biehn, who is a super and plays it kind of like dirty Harry complete with cigar, and he has apparently an endless supply and smokes in a closed environment with all these people and nuclear war outside, very smart. There are also two gay guys, kind of a well meaning African American, and a mom with her daughter. Apparently, huge parts of this were improvised and it really looks like it. For example, the two gay guys by the end of the movie are raping one of the women. What? Some people’s hair falls out and some people’s don’t. I mean, this is just — it’s a mess. I suppose the idea is the divide between what makes us animals and what makes us humans. I don’t know what the point was. This is a terrible movie. Zero stars.
