The Descendants

JOY REVIEW

The Descendants stars George Clooney and a supporting cast filled with Beau Bridges, Robert Forrester, Judy Greer and some other people whose names you won’t probably recognize. It’s the story of a very wealthy Hawaiian man who is going through several crises in his life simultaneously. He has an 11-year-old daughter who is doing some serious acting out and his 17-year-old daughter has a drug and sex problem, and is on the Big Island in very expensive rehab. To further things, his wife is in a coma and George has to face the question of whether or not she was having an affair. And to make things even more complicated, the family owns a huge amount of property in Hawaii, which they are trying to decide whether or not to sell. This is the movie that people are talking about giving George Clooney an Oscar nomination for. He is terrific in it, and it’s sort of an interesting movie. It doesn’t have a lot of pizzazz to it, but it’s probably a better movie than the Ides of March, though a lot less entertaining. Three stars.
