The Change-Up stars two very cute actors, Ryan Reynolds and Jason Bateman, and a bevy of attractive women, which includes Leslie Mann and Olivia Wilde, who seems to be in everything these days. The story is they’re childhood buddies where one has a perfect settled life and is about to be made partner in his law firm with a gorgeous wife, adorable twins, and a precocious daughter while the other is a womanizing dropout with Alan Arkin as a father. One night they go out and get drunk and tinkle in a fountain and decide that they want to change lives, and voila, they do. This movie actually has got, as I said, two very appealing actors and some heart to it, and really a fairly sentimental message, but it’s so crude and so rude, including a baby pooping into her father’s mouth, I mean how crude is that? The F-bomb is just every other word, so the first half of the movie set a completely different tone. I think what they were trying to do is have the cute guys appeal to women and the crudity appeal to young men, who are much of the movie-going public. That was a mistake. If they had just been sentimental and had a cute movie, I think they would have done something. As it is, I think it’s going to be a turn off to a large part of the audience that it was trying to appeal to. Two stars.
