The Big Year

JOY REVIEW

The Big Year stars Steve Martin, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson and is about birding, which used to be called bird watching, but apparently they object strenuously to that concept, so we will call it birding. This is actually a fairly fun movie with a cast that makes you expect that it’s going to be more slapstick and sillier than it is, but I actually liked it. The idea surrounds three guys, one of whom is kind of a yuppie with a gorgeous wife who’s trying to get pregnant, and he has been the foremost birder in the world for seeing the most number of birds. Steve Martin plays a very successful industrialist who is getting burned out and has always wanted to have a big year, which is a year where you sight birds. Jack Black is a man-child whose life is a mess, who works at a job that he hates, and wants desperately to be off birding and find a relationship. So, this is really a story, first of all, about birds, which I don’t actually care about very much, but it’s also about guys trying to find their potential and the price of obsession and friendship. I actually liked this movie a lot more than I expected to. At the beginning of the film they gave us free concessions, which always makes you think that the movie isn’t very good, but this is actually a fun movie! Having said that, I would give it three stars. I thought it was surprisingly sweet.
