The Assault

JOY REVIEW

THE ASSAULT; L’ASSAUT is a French film that is about the Christmas eve hijacking of an Air France Air Bus from Algeria that was slated to crash into the Eiffel Tower.  The whole thing was really stymied by the fact that the stairs hadn’t been moved away. So the pilot couldn’t take off and by the time they had, the pilot convinced the terrorists that there wasn’t enough fuel to get to Paris, so they landed in Marseilles at which point the special forces assaulted the plane after two days, it was on Monday the 26th in 1994. This is an extraordinary film. It certainly gives pause to things that happened seven years later and why we sort of didn’t figure this out, but we apparently didn’t. This one is like the flight of the United Flight 93, except that you know the personalities and the back stories of the people involved, including the assault team a bit more and one of their wife and his daughter and why he was ready to leave the assault team because he had led an assault on a building where a family was killed. So you know a lot more about the personalities behind some of the players but it’s a truly scary film and very intense, and perhaps even in some ways more alarming because I wasn’t as familiar with this, obviously, as I was with the events of September 11th. Five stars.
