The Artist is kind of a tough sell in that it’s in black and white, and it’s silent, but don’t let that put you off. It’s really a wonderful movie. It’s maybe 10 or 15 minutes too long, but what movie among us is not 10 or 15 minutes too long these days. It’s got the great Jean Dujardin. I have seen in him in OS117, which I thought was crappy. I thought it was a horrible movie and made a huge amount of money in France, as did the follow-up. And I said, when I saw the movies, that I thought it was stupid; it was a James Bond satire that was just beyond stupid, but I thought he was adorable. He’s kind of Cary Grant-esque. In this one, he plays a silent film star, who’s a combination of Douglas Fairbanks and maybe Rudolph Valentino. He looks terrific, and I mean it’s a very smart, funny, interesting, beautifully shot movie. I give it four stars.
