Terribly Happy – Movie Review
A thriller about a Copenhagen cop who moves to a small town after having a nervous breakdown
Terribly Happy is the nominee for best foreign language film from Denmark. It stars Jakob Cebregen who plays a cop from Copenhagen who, for reasons we don’t understand in the beginning, is transferred to a small town to become the marshal. Eventually he becomes involved with somewhat of the town tramp. She claims that she is being abused by her husband and the rest of the town pretends it’s not going down. The woman has a child who takes her dolly for a ride in the baby carriage when the violence is occurring. The movie is about how people decide where they belong and where they can be happy. This is really a terrific movie. It can be confusing at times, but it’s very well acted. It’s a bit macabre, and you’re not sure who the good guys and the bad guys are. A lovely, subtle, ambiguous, and smart movie. Four stars.
