Snow White and the Huntsman

JOY REVIEW

SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMEN;  This is the second Snow White movie of the season. Mirror, Mirror starred Julia Roberts and this one’s got Charlize Theron in it as the wicked witch. On balance, I think Charlize wins over Julia. Her clothes are better. She has clothes to die for. Snow White is played somewhat pallidly by Kristen Stewart, who’s cute and looks probably like a princess should, but Charlize gets to chew on the scenery. The story, as everyone knows, follows Grimm much more than Disney, although there is a scene with fairies. The seven dwarfs — I don’t want to give away too much of the movie, because part of it is the fun of watching it unfold — is played by a bunch of very famous British actors, which you think I didn’t know they were that short. That’s a joke. They’re not. It’s CGI. But nevertheless, this is a fancier production. It’s less Disney, less tongue in cheek. Some of the graphics are unbelievable. As I said, Charlize’s costumes are fabulous. This is grim, as well as Grimm, one M and two Ms both. It is too long. This would have been a much better movie about 15 or 20 minutes shorter, and this is not for small children. Most of Grimm’s fairytales that we know, mostly through Disney, are incredibly grim and not very cheerful. But this is a fun movie, and as I said, it would have probably been slightly more effective at a little bit shorter. But as it is, it’s certainly better than Mirror, Mirror.  I give it three stars.
