Sleepwalk with Me

JOY REVIEW

Sleepwalk with Me is an expansion of Michael Birbiglia’s one man show, Sleepwalk with Me, which was very successful. I think the movie is not nearly as successful and turning a one man show into a movie has some difficulties. The cast is good, Carol Kane and James Rebhorn play his parents and various good actors play various parts in the movie, but when he did it as a stand up, he’s such an engaging presence that you’re really on his side and the movie makes him basically a shallow, egotistical exploiter of his girlfriend that makes him look mean spirited and unpleasant, none of which came through in his one man show. Mike, I think if I were you, I’d stick with your one man show if you want to be a sympathetic character. The movie, in which he’s the director and he does the asides to the camera, like he does in part of his one man show, is really supposed to be somewhat autobiographical. He starts out as a comedian and it just doesn’t work. Him telling the stories about himself is charming, the movie is significantly less. Two stars.
