Shame stars Michael Fassbender and Carey Mulligan. This is a very artsy film that is very slow-paced and it’s basically two very pretty people doing vaguely soft-core porn. A friend of mine pointed out that it’s really not great porn because everybody’s so angry in it, but Michael wanders around naked and I think in the first five minutes there are at least five full-frontal nude shots of him; so take that American public. Carey Mulligan, who is easy to confuse with Michelle Williams, especially in her blonde-icity, plays his kind of kooky sister. If you can’t figure out in the first five minutes what’s going on here, you haven’t been paying much attention. I won’t tell you because hopefully you’ll be able to figure it out for yourself, but if anybody has ever worried about whether or not child abuse is something people carry into their adulthood, this is something that this movie addresses without actually saying so. As a morality tale, it’s hugely powerful. As a movie, it’s a little slow. Two and a half stars.
