This is presented by the Bedlam Theater Company at the Culture Project, the reason that this “Hamlet” is so remarkable is that all the parts are played just 4 actors, as you will recall, Hamlet has a lot of characters. This is a tour-de-force, it all kinda happens in a blank room, with no real scenery or staging except for a set of stairs and even the chairs in the audience are sometimes used as props. In and of itself, this is a Hamlet you want to see. If you’ve seen a lot of Hamlets, its kind of different to see Polonius and his son Laertes played by the same actor, and the way he changes characters by taking glasses on and off, kind of an interesting take on it. Is this a way to see Hamlet if you are crazy about the play, or have never seen it before? Probably not. Are the actors are really good, yes they really are. The Director, Eric Tucker, also stars in the play, and it all basically takes place in blue jeans and sneakers, there is no getting distracted by the costumes or the scenery. It clocks in at just under 3 hours, the first act is a bit tedious, and if you’re not truly a theater afficionado, I think the first act really does drag, but the second and third acts are great. so, if I’m going to evaluate this as just a Hamlet, I would probably give it 3 stars. If you’re viewing it as a Hamlet done by 4 actors, I would probably give it more, but the point is, why are you doing it this way? And I suppose its to show off or keep the ticket prices down, or just because you can. So, I will probably have to stick with the 3 star rating.
