Safe House stars Denzel Washington and Ryan Reynolds with Robert Patrick, Brendan Gleeson, Sam Shepard, and Vera Farmiga. The story is that Denzel plays a rogue CIA agent with a serious fro who turns himself in for reasons that nobody understands, and you actually won’t understand by the end of the movie either, in to a safe house in Cape Town, South Africa where Ryan Reynolds, the rookie, is in charge of things and the resulting chaos where somehow the safe house is broken into and Denzel and Ryan have to escape to another place. We’ve also got Sam Shepherd playing the head of the CIA. You are going to guess exactly what the issue is in the first three minutes, but this is Denzel being cute and Ryan Reynolds being cute and some of the dialogue works okay. It is incredibly violent. The chases are pretty interesting. It is very dark, not only in tone but in lighting, and some of the dialogue is so muddy that you can barely understand it, and the music is very loud. As I said, very violent, very testosterone, but Denzel is kind of charming. At the end it is a little hard to follow until you realize there is actually no plot here, but I suppose you really don’t need one. If you are looking for a little jolt of something, I think you may be fine. Two and a half stars.
