Ruby Sparks is kind of a fanciful tale that stars Zoe Kazan, who also wrote it, Paul Dano, Antonio Banderas and Annette Bening as Paul Dano’s parents, Steve Kugan as a fellow writer, Elliott Gould as his therapist, and Chris Messina as his brother. So you can tell it’s a really high powered, very interesting cast. The idea is that Paul Dano is a wunderkind who has written a book as a young man and he gets writers block, so he decides to start writing about this woman that he’s dreaming of and she comes to life. This is kind of a variation on the Pygmalion theme, so it’s kind of cute. It has to do with relationships and what we like about somebody and what we don’t like about somebody. It’s a little bit chick flicky to be quite honest, but the performances are terrific and the fact that Zoe and Paul Dano are in a relationship in real life makes it kind of cute. Alright, three stars.
