Roadie

JOY REVIEW

Roadie is one of those movies that film festivals just love. It stars Ron Eldard, Bobby Cannavale, and Jill Hennessy, and according to the notes, “a refreshingly eclectic ’70s hard rock soundtrack”. The idea is that Ron Eldard plays Jimmy, who is a kid from Queens, and he’s been the roadie for the Blue Oyster Cult for 26 years, which is a rock band, and he’s now gotten fired and is kind of lost, so he goes home to visit mom. The problem about this is that even though the acting is good, and apparently he put on 30 pounds — I don’t know why people view that as acting, but nevertheless — there’s really nobody to like in this movie. It’s okay. It’s sort of why people are not crazy about independent movies to be quite honest, because nothing much happens and you’re not sure that you really like the characters very much and it’s kind of gritty. Two and a half stars.
