Return is a very sincere look at what happens when a woman comes home as opposed to when a man comes home from Iraq. Linda Cardellini plays this woman whose husband, Michael Shannon, seems to be long suffering, except, as it turns out, he’s really not. The thing about this is, you’ve seen it all before except for the fact that it’s a woman rather than a man. Although we saw the Dennis Quaid movie where his wife was actually killed in the war and how he has to deal with his kids, but it’s a completely different plot. However, it just doesn’t have much snap to it. You sort of more or less care about the characters but not a whole lot. It just seems a little flat. John Slattery has a brief cameo as a presumably Vietnam vet who is slightly off kilter, and when he’s on screen the movie clicks a little bit more, but not enough to save it. Two stars.
