Rampart is a tour-de-force for Woody Harrelson, and he plays an L.A. cop who is clearly homophobic, misogynistic, racist, sexist, a dinosaur, violent, and he’s losing his hair. He’s married two sisters, serially, and has a daughter by each of them. All five of them live together, his idea of keeping the family together, and he’s been involved in some questionable behavior on the force for over 24 years after being a Vietnam vet. Woody Harrelson is terrific in this, but we’ve seen it all before; the cop unraveling and being violent. It somehow seems like a movie that time forgot, so even though Harrelson’s very good in it and very convincing as a lunatic that’s going off the deep end, we’ve seen other people do it just as well, if not better. And the point is, we’ve seen it before. One and a half stars.
