“Raisin in the Sun” with Denzel Washington, and it really has to be described like that, I’ve seen Raisin in the Sun three or four times, but Denzel is a rock star and when he comes out, people shriek and scream and audience is completely filled, there is a line around the block, proving that Denzel can pack the house. This has not been one of my favorite plays, it always seemed a little melodramatic and over the top. If that is how you feel about Raisin in the Sun, then you should definitely go see this one, because it is terrific, becuase it is funny, its lighthearted, its emotional. I’m not sure that I’ve ever been at a performace where I felt some much affection rolling over the footlights toward the cast and the material. This is a really great Raisin in the Sun and Denzel is really supported by not only the material and not only his celebrity and charisma, but by a terrific cast. I never really appreciated the play before, but this a stellar production, partially due a great cast, but mostly by Denzel, and the lightness that he brings and the glee that he brings and the fun and the pathos. 4.5 stars
