Quartet is one of those projects that has academy award written all over it.  First of all, the executive producer and director is Dustin Hoffman, yay!  The cast includes Billy Connolly, Tom Courtenay, Pauline Collins, and Maggie Smith.  If that weren’t enough, it features a whole lot of very well known singers and musicians.  The story is that there is a retirement home for retired musicians, and all of them get along relatively well.  Even though they have various issues including broken hips and memory problems, they’re all still talented, even though they’re aging, and then Maggie shows up and disrupts everything!  This is one of those movies that is really a pleasure to watch.  It makes the idea of growing old, if not fun, at least palatable, and makes me wish desperately that I could play a musical instrument and retire at a place that looks as much fun as there!  Five stars.
