Pitch Perfect I think seeks to cash in on the Glee, High School musical craze. This one moves up a step, I suppose, to college. This is a group of competitive acapella singers. I’ve actually gone to some concerts, and apparently it really is the hip art form. This one has got a group of guys who’ve always won the national championship – and a group of women, who are at the same school who somehow don’t quite make it. The subplots here involves the outsider girl who decides that she really needs to have some girl buds and the budding relationships, and the uptight popular girl who needs to be brought down a peg, and the set of social misfits. This is kind of a combination of High School Musical, The Bad News Bears, Rocky, and everything else. So, I mean it’s got cliche after cliche, but the acapella stuff is really fun. Elizabeth Banks is wonderful as kind of a nutsy color commentary. My favorite line in the movie is, ‘You’re so right that everybody else looks wrong.’ I mean, it’s fun! It’s cute! It probably could have been a little sharper and a little shorter, but it’s fun. I’d give it three stars.
