People Like Us

JOY REVIEW

People Like Us is based, apparently, on a true story. It stars Chris Pine as kind of a wheeler/dealer, Elizabeth Banks as a single woman with her own addiction issues who is raising a smart but difficult child, Olivia Wilde as Chris’s girlfriend, Jon Favreau is his boss, and Michelle Pfeiffer is the mom. Don’t want to give too much away, but the idea is that Sam is a fast talking salesman who’s latest deal collapses on the day he learns that his father has suddenly died. Against his wishes he is called home where he has to deal with his father’s estate, which includes a letter with $150,000 in cash that says take care of them with an address. I am not going to tell you too much about what happens, but this is really sort of a charming story that I suppose is more common than one would think or hope and it’s very well done, partially because of the acting. Three stars.
