Only God Forgives is an odd, new collaboration with Ryan Gosling, and is directed by the same director who directed him in The Driver. It is a crude, incredibly gory, violent film that the story takes a while to sort out. The movie features three brothers, with a Cruella Deville mom, played by Kristine Scott Thomas. One brother ends up dead because he rapes and murders the daughter of a man who then avenges her. The father is a shadowy policeman who doesn’t wear a uniform but wears a slick suit and sings karaoke at night and is devoted to his daughter. Ryan Gosling, the brother of the man who was killed, then seeks to avenge his brother’s death. There’s not a whole lot of dialogue in this film but it is beautifully shot, and the reason you’d see it is because this director has an incredible eye so that all of the scenes are really beautiful. So it depends on your tolerance for this amount of gore and violence. If gore makes you sick I’d avoid it. If you’re into out-there, violent, tie style films, you might like this movie. It’s hard to evaluate. In terms of visuals, I’d probably give it 4 to 4 and a half stars. In terms of the interesting plot, I’d probably also give it a 4. However, in terms of palatability it’s probably a -4. So, I give it two stars.
