Nymphomaniac is much-awaited new release from Lars von Trier, and this movie will live up to its billing, the movie is in two parts, and it is a little hard to describe, because part of it is really smart, part of it is really funny, it’s got great actors, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgård, and Stacey Martin as the young nymphomaniac, showing off everything she’s got. It looks at a subject that’s pretty uncomfortable for people to talk about, and the “c-word” is dropped every bit as often as the “f-word” and maybe more, which seems to be a trend these days. The idea is, this is a young woman who discovers her sexuality, to put it gently, at a very young age, and then we see how this plays out, and how she decides to lose her virginity. There is a montage of about 30 penises of various shapes, ilks, sizes. There are sex scenes that are the most graphic that you’ve ever seen, and you might call it pornographic, but it lacks some of the trappings of regular pornography, but it is certainly very very graphic, in addition to having a very stellar cast. I guess the point is to sort of get us over the notion that sex is something particularly special, and that the sexual appetite is something particularly aberrant. Not the kind of movie to go see on a first date, and it is very uneven, it goes from being very literate to being very crude, to foul language, to concepts talking about mathematical principles, to Bach. It is certainly an experience like no other you will see at the movies, but whether or not it is your cup of tea depends on your tolerance for a lot of things that are smashed together. I will give it 3 stars.
