The National Theater of China’s Richard III…I know, who but me would go to see Richard III Chinese style, most of the people in the audience were Asian. This was done with a bare stage, a Chinese percussionist, and supertitles. The problem was that the supertitles were too few, too stupid, and often out of order, which made them confusing and useless. If you don’t know anything about Richard III going in, you won’t know anything coming out either. The good news is that the costumes are sumptuous. It is a very interesting take on a very well known play. The assassins are played by two Chinese acrobats dressed as clowns which is certainly a different take. The music, the sound, the movement, made for a really interesting experience, but you do need to know the story going in, 4 stars.
