The story of the first openly gay elected official in San Francisco, circa 1970’s. Sean Penn plays Harvey Milk, who was gunned down by a fellow supervisor, played by Josh Brolin.
Sean Penn won the Oscar for “Milk”, now out on DVD. It’s a great opportunity for people who missed it in the theater, to see what all the fuss was about. The story focuses on the first openly gay elected official in the United States. It’s the story of San Francisco, board of supervisors, Harvey Milk, who was gunned down by a fellow supervisor, played by Josh Brolin, who is also terrific. Also terrific is James Franco, who plays Harvey’s lover; but it is really Sean Penn’s movie. For those of us who have been following his career, we have seldom seen Sean smile or display the lightness of being, and grace displayed here. “Milk” is a piece of history, a piece of the current issue about same sex marriage and the propositions going on in California. The main reason to see this is not only for Harvey Milk, but for Sean Penn’s terrific performance. Four stars
