Machine Gun Preacher
Machine Gun Preacher stars Gerard Butler, Michelle Monahan, and Michael Shannon. The movie is based on a true story of a guy who was really a thug to say the least. He was in prison until he found religion and happened to have heard a sermon about the situation in Sudan and Uganda, and since he was close by them doing construction, he decides to go there and save the children from the genocide and the kidnapping that’s going on. In some ways, this is very much a movie like the Whistle Blower, that you feel lousy for being a human being when you leave, and the violence is so personal and so graphic and so obscene that to call it entertainment just seems a very bad idea. The first half of the movie is so badly written, that you can’t help thinking to yourself ‘just because it’s a do-good story doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t have had a writer on it.’ The second half picks up a bit, but it probably because it is so violent and so stomach churning. I think it’s a story that needs to be told, I’m just not sure this is the movie for it, and I’m not certain that stomach-churning violence should be part. Maybe it should be part of a documentary, I don’t know. Two and a half stars.
