A widower whose book about coping with loss turns him into a best-selling self-help guru, falls for the hotel florist where his seminar is given, only to learn that he hasn’t yet truly confronted his wife’s passing.
Love Happens is Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Anniston with Dan Fogler in it as well. The reason that I mentioned Dan Fogler is because I actually was in the Putnam County Spelling Bee with him. He’s a terrific actor who has not had much work to do, but nearly steals this movie out from under two seasoned pros. Aaron Eckhart plays a guru who has figured out and runs seminars teaching people how to confront their grief after his wife is killed. Jennifer Anniston is a florist who he bumps into and the question is, can she teach him to love again? The love story about this is pretty mundane and prosaic. As I said, Dan Fogler as the guru’s agent and major domo and best friend nearly steals the movie. But the movie isn’t really a romantic comedy; it’s really about confronting death, and a couple of the supporting actors also steal the movie in talking about how difficult it is to deal with the death of a loved one. Sometimes it’s silly, like the woman who takes her husband’s ashes and makes him into his favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe and sometimes it’s not at all — about a man who has lost his eight-year-old child. So this is a movie that was marketed very poorly but it’s actually worth your time. Three stars.
